How to calculate time and a half

Time and a half means 1.5 times your normal hourly rate. Hourly rate × 1.5 × hours worked. For example, at $25 an hour, time and a half is $37.50 an hour, so 8 hours pays $300 instead of $200.

When do you get time and a half in NZ?

  • Public holidays: under the Holidays Act 2003, anyone who works on a public holiday must be paid at least time and a half. If it is an otherwise working day, you also get an alternative (lieu) day.
  • Overtime: there is no legal requirement to pay overtime at time and a half in NZ. It only applies if your employment agreement says so.
  • Weekends: weekend penal rates also depend on your agreement, not the law.

Is time and a half paid on regional anniversary days?

Yes, if the anniversary day observed in your region falls on a day you work, it is treated as a public holiday.

Is time and a half taxed more?
